The Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, has stressed the need for Nigerians to engage in tree planting in order to protect the environment.
Prof. Orumwense who made the call while flagging-off a tree planting campaign in the campus, said the exercise would check natural disaster and add to the ecstatic value of the institution.
He noted that the development was in line with the institution’s long standing commitment to increase students’ interest towards a green environment and meet academic goals.
The don noted that the tree planting exercise embarked upon by the Faculty of Education would be appreciated in future and charged other faculties to emulate the good work of their education counterpart. According to him, “it is a welcome development. It will protect our infrastructure from wind and other natural disasters. The timing is appropriate.”
Also speaking, the Dean Faculty of Education, Prof. Sunday Iyamu, said the tree planting campaign was to enhance the aesthetics of the institution and also serve as wind-barrier protection for infrastructure.
