The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency has advised pregnant women to use insecticide treated nets to prevent malaria.

The organizations said that despite tremendous progress made in the fight against malaria, it still remains an acute public health problem in many communities.

 The State Director National Orientation Agency (NOA) Dr. Mrs Ngozi Uduma said malaria infection during pregnancy was associated with severe anaemia and other illness in the mother, and also contributes to low birth weight among newborn infants.

Speaking during a session at the Presbyterian church in Ama-Ekpu  ,Ohafia,  Uduma urged them to desist from using it as scarecrow in their farms.

The fight against malaria, noting that, the long lasting insecticides treated net was now being used to carry okro to the market by most women rural women. 

Dr. Uduma said focused antenatal service at least four times before child birth goes a very long way to save both the mother and the child from health hazards, and death.
