No fewer than 100 young men and women in Kano have participated in a four-day training programme organised by UNICEF in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The essence of the training, with the theme ‘Mobilising Nigeria’s Youths for Increased Access to Safe, Quality Education for All, Especially Girls’, was to build the capacity of the youths in developing advocacy messages targeting policy makers and other stakeholders with regard to access to quality education for all.

Addressing journalists during the training, Education Officer Unicef, Katsina Field Office, Mr Saka Adebayo Ibrahim, said “We are building their capacity on how to play an active role in ensuring that governments deliver on their promises made in relation to education, and for the community to enroll their children in school.”

“For instance, making education at primary and secondary levels to be free and compulsory; employing qualified teachers, including females, especially in the rural areas; providing learning materials to pupils in schools and all other relevant interventions required to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state,” he added

Mr Ibrahim said the youth were not trained as pressure group or to be in confrontation with the people in authority, but they are going to employ peaceful methods like lobbying and advocacy to achieve the desired goals

Also speaking, the Director Social Mobilization SUBEB, Hajiya Amina Umar, said Kano State had a significant percentage of the over 10 million out-of-school children, hence the need to train the youths to support the mobilization for school enrollment.
