The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and stakeholders in Zamfara State have reviewed progress made in healthcare, education, nutrition, child protection and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes, with reports indicating improvements in key health indicators across the state.

The review meeting followed a supervision visit to Dr Karima Primary Healthcare Centre and was held at the Ministry of Information and Culture in Gusau.

UNICEF officials highlighted activities implemented during the last quarter, including community engagement programmes, supportive supervision visits, distribution of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and interventions aimed at strengthening Ward Development Committees (WDCs).

They said the programmes were designed to improve service delivery and deepen community participation in health and social development initiatives.

Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary, Muhammad Salihu Anka, and other stakeholders commended UNICEF for supporting efforts to reduce open defecation, tackle the challenge of out-of-school children and prevent cholera outbreaks in the state.

Participants observed that health indicators had improved significantly compared to previous records.

The stakeholders stressed the need for proper documentation and timely submission of reports to facilitate effective planning and sustain ongoing interventions.

UNICEF officials also underscored the importance of regular supervision and adherence to reporting procedures to maintain quality service delivery.

The meeting recommended weekly review of complaint and suggestion boxes at Dr Karima Primary Healthcare Centre to ensure prompt response to concerns raised by community members.

UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Zamfara State Government and communities to improve the wellbeing of women, children and other vulnerable groups across the state.
