The University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA) has pledged to rebuild the Faculty of Social Sciences which structures were razed down by fire recently.

Yakubu Idris, the association’s chairman made the pledge when he visited the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Seddi Maimako, on Wednesday.

He said his visit was to support the “Operation Beauty from Ashes” campaign meant to raise funds and books for the renovation and restocking of the University’s burnt library.

According to him, the alumni had initially planned to build a lecture theatre and donate to the university, adding that “but with the fire incident at the library complex, UJAA will channel its energy towards raising funds for the renovation of the Library Building before embarking on another project.”

Idris promised to reach out to alumni to donate to this project. “I assure management that we will do something substantial. The UJAA has opened an account with Skye Bank for this purpose,” he said.

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor thanked the association for its support to the university.

He said the university rolled out the initiative to raise funds from within the university first before reaching out to other stakeholders for assistance.

“The management of the university last Thursday launched ‘operation beauty from ashes.’ Principal Officers of the university committed 6 million Naira to purchase books for the library," Professor Maimako said.
