A final year medical student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ojo Roland Oluwapelumi, has won the Resolution Social Venture Competition Award for 2017.

Roland was given the award at the 2017 Youth Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

The assembly, ‘Society for all: Equity and Inclusion for Sustainable Future’ had about 1,000 delegates in attendance  and created different learning, training and investment opportunities for participants such as coding session by Microsoft, innovative technology session by Wikipedia, World Bank group session among others.

During the Youth Assembly, there was a Resolution Social Venture competition designed to inspire youths to propose solutions to pressing social issues around the world. For the first round, over 50 persons entered into the competition with 31 scaling through to the second stage. For the final stage, nine persons were shortlisted after pitching their ideas before the panel and audience.

For the competition, Roland pitched his idea tagged ‘Safer Hands’ which was meant to educate and empower traditional birth attendants in South-West Nigeria to enhance good pregnancy outcomes.

Subsequently, he was presented the Resolution Fellowship award. He would be given $1,500 for the start-up of the venture with mentorship and access to funding opportunities.
