A History and International Relations graduate of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Abdulhakeem Abdulkareem Ibrahim, has emerged as second prize winner in an essay contest tagged, “Broadband: A catalyst for national development,’’ organised by the National Communications Commission (NCC).
The commission’s director of publicity, Tony Ojobo, said plagiarism check was carried out on all entries that scored 70 per cent and above, adding that only the three prize winners emerged among the 639 entries.
However, the commission decided to reward seven participants with consolation prizes, wherein the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) got a total of 3 prizes.
The winners were Odonoekuma Onyebuchi Ekuma, UNN (1st prize winner), Abdulhakeem Abdulkareem Ibrahim, Unilorin (2nd prize winner) and Asogwa Chijioke Peter, UNN (3rd prize winner). A consolation prize of N50, 000 each was given to UNN, University of Port Harcourt, Federal University of Technology, Minna and the University of Lagos, Akoka-Yaba.
The first prize was a cash prize of N500,000, a laptop and a printer. The second prize was a cash prize of N300,000, and a laptop, while a cash prize of N200, 000 and a laptop went to the third prize winner.
In his remark, the executive vice chairman of the NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta said, “The broadband infrastructure is still in its formative stage and non-existence in some places. As a professor who has supervised projects closely related to Quality of Service (QoS), I intend to bring together, the experience in ensuring that QoS improves.”
