Prof. Olayemi made this appeal while speaking with journalists in Ilorin after a meeting with Chairmen of the sub-committees of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

The Professor of Microbiology said: “University of Ilorin is fully prepared and poised not only to host the event but also to raise the scale, thereby making a mark that will pose a lasting challenge to future hosts. Of course, the Vice-Chancellor is in the forefront and all hands are on deck to ensure a successful and unforgettable competition.”

Speaking on the rationale behind hosting the games and what Nigeria stands to gain, Prof. Olayemi said the games will help promote regional co-operation.

“The promotion of opportunities to exchange and understand ourselves in this sub-region, particularly among the youth, is a compelling challenge to any responsive university,” he said.

He said at least 14 West African countries have indicated their readiness to participate in the games, while at least 60 universities will be represented across the sub-region.

While thanking the students of the institution for the active participation in the preparation for the games, Olayemi charged them to continue supporting the university administration in its bid to host memorable games.
