The University of Maiduguri has declared Monday, October 11 lecture free day to welcome home the indomitable football that recently emerged champions of the 2021 Higher Institutions Football League (HiFL).

The Desert Warriors, as the football team of University of Maiduguri is called defeated debutants Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba (AAUA) Luminaries 1-0 in the finals played on Saturday, October 9 at the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) Sports Complex in Lagos.

Unimaid Captain and StanbicIBTC Man-of-the-Match, Ochei Elijah scored the only goal of the finals in the 62nd minute to hand the Warriors their maiden title.

A statement by the Registrar signed on his behalf by Flibus Yamta Mshelia, Director, Senate and Academic Matters stated that arrangements have been concluded for staff and students of the university to receive the victorious team at the Maiduguri International Airport.

“This is to inform all staff and students that lectures and other academic activities have been cancelled for Monday, October 11 2021.

“This is to enable all staff and students to receive the University of Maiduguri football team, Desert Warriors who were victorious in the Higher Institutions Football League (HiFL).

“The team will be returning from Lagos and arrangements are underway for staff and students to receive the team at the Maiduguri International Airport on their return.

“Staff, students and members of the university community will be transported to the airport. Other activities marking the return of the team will be announced shortly,” the statement revealed.
