Union Hails Gov Aliyu for Approving Implementation of ASUU-FGN Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapters of Shehu Shagari University, Sokoto (ASUU-SSU) and Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto (ASUU-SSUES) have commended the Sokoto State Government for approving the implementation of key provisions of the ASUU-Federal Government Agreement reached in December 2025.
In a joint statement signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-SSU, Dr. Bello Musa, and the Chairperson of ASUU-SSUES, Dr. Shamsudeen Kabir, the union expressed profound gratitude to Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for what it described as a landmark decision that makes Sokoto the first state in the North-West region to approve the implementation of the agreement.
The union specifically praised the governor for approving a 40 per cent salary increment for academic staff, the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) covering two academic sessions, and the constitution of the Governing Council for Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto.
According to ASUU, the approvals demonstrate the governor’s commitment to strengthening higher education and improving the welfare of academic staff in the state.
“The landmark achievements clearly demonstrate His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to the advancement of higher education in Sokoto State,” the statement said.
The union also lauded Governor Aliyu’s leadership and dedication to educational development, noting that the measures would contribute significantly to the growth and stability of tertiary institutions in the state.
While expressing appreciation for the approvals, ASUU appealed to the state government to consider other outstanding demands affecting its members.
Among the pending issues highlighted by the union are the payment of outstanding third-party deductions, including cooperative contributions and union check-off dues, promotion arrears spanning seven academic sessions, and arrears arising from the 25/35 per cent salary adjustment covering a 14-month period from January 2024 to February 2025.
The union expressed optimism that the state government would give favourable consideration to the remaining claims in due course, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at enhancing the quality of higher education in Sokoto State.
