President General of the union Comrade Amechi Asugwuni said in Lagos at the weekend that the continued casualizaion of workers in the affected companies harms the nation’s economy as well as the welfare of workers.
Asugwuni said that the union has already started moves to ensure that Chinese and Asian companies in the sector halt casualization of their workforce in Nigeria.
He said that two leading Chinese companies operating in Nigeria have agreed to convert 4000 casual workers in their employ to full employment before the end of the year.
According to him, efforts are already in top gear to normalize the employment status of 2000 workers by the end of this month, while the other half would get theirs normalized by November.
He noted that the union is also discussing with other Chinese companies on the need to reduce the number of casual workers in their companies by next year.
