The Joint Council of Unions in Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, has embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands.

Consequently, academic and non-academic activities in the college have been suspended.

Speaking through a statement jointly signed by the chairmen and secretaries of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) in Uyo, the unions said their members would not return to work until all their demands were met.

The statement said the unions embarked on the strike after the expiration of a 14 days ultimatum that they gave the state government and management.

Their grievances included non-payment and implementation of 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017 promotion arrears; persistent salary cuts and non-payment of 7.5% contributory pensions of some members.
