The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has pledged continuous engagement with governments of Sudan and South Sudan to find solutions to the crisis in the Abyei area.
The Abyei area, a border between South Sudan and the Sudan, was accorded “special administrative status” by the 2004 protocol on the resolution of the Abyei conflict in the comprehensive peace agreement that ended the second Sudanese civil war.

The acting head of mission and force commander, Major-General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr, disclosed this in a statement by the spokesman of the Mission, titled: “UNISFA to Broker Peace Accord Between the Two Communities in Abyei” yesterday.
According to the statement, Sawyerr said they would find a solution to the lingering issues that were not resolved during the conference.
“The UNISFA will continue to ensure peace in Abyei box while protecting the communities. We will continue to engage the governments of Sudan and South Sudan on issues raised at this meeting,” he stated.
Sawyerr also promised to continue supporting UN agencies in providing humanitarian assistance to the communities.
On her part, the special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ms Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, pledged to continue engaging the key players to find a solution on the final status of Abyei.
