Unity Bar gets panel to investigate ‘missing N30m’

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch (Unity bar) has set up a panel of senior lawyers to investigate issues surrounding its alleged ‘missing N30 million’ members’ fees.

The Victor Abasiakam-Ekim-led faction took this decision at its first monthly meeting penultimate Friday. 

The panel includes three senior advocates, Dr. Alex Izinyon, Israel Olorundare and Ikechukwu Okechukwu; and a former International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) chairperson, Hajiya Amina Agbaje.

Abasiakam-Ekim told members that the attention of the executives was drawn to a First City Monument Bank (FCMB) account held in the name of the NBA, Abuja Branch Number 3950389013. 

He said as at 7th November, 2016, the account had a credit balance of N27.7 million only for the balance to drop to N2,051 as at December 9, 2016.

He said investigations showed that the account was opened and operated by Barrister Ezenwa Anumnu (another factional leader of the branch) using funds belonging to the branch.

Following a suggestion by one of the members that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) be contacted to investigate the matter, a resolution was passed setting up the fact-finding panel to ascertain the whereabouts of the money.
