The National Universities Commission (NUC) has called on private universities to shun acts capable of compromising the quality of programmes.

NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, made the call in Benin while delivering the 14th convocation lecture at the Benson Idahosa University.

“Areas where there are loopholes, in relation to quality, must be plugged. Excellence in every facet of the operations of the private universities must be the watchword of the proprietors and the regulatory agencies,” he advised.

Rasheed, represented by the commission’s Director of Accreditation, Dr. Noel Salihu also explained that the establishment of private universities in Nigeria was a reflection of the need to close the gaps created by the challenges faced by government-owned higher institutions across the country.
