Unpaid entitlements: ASUU threatens disruption in Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has warned that failure by Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa state governments to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement in their universities could trigger fresh disruption of academic activities.
The union said while federal universities have begun implementing the agreement, none of the state-owned universities in the zone has complied.
Addressing a press briefing held in Kano on Wednesday, the Zonal Coordinator of the union, Comrade Abdulrazaq Ibrahim, stressed that the union’s patience had been exhausted after years of sacrifice and restraint.
“We call on the governments of Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa states to, with immediate effect, expedite the domestication and full implementation of all provisions of the duly signed Agreement. Continued delay, selective implementation, or outright disregard will inevitably undermine industrial harmony and disrupt the academic calendar,” he said.
The 2025 agreement, signed after eight years of negotiation, covers arrears of salaries, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professional Secretariat Allowance (SAA), and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
ASUU noted that universities in Bauchi, Ekiti, Osun, Benue, and Sokoto states have already implemented the deal, making the Kano Zone’s non-compliance more glaring.
The union also cautioned bursars against taxing CATA, which it said is exempt under the agreement, and rejected the federal government’s refusal to pay withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries accrued during the last strike. It further lamented delays in pension remittances and third-party deductions.
Beyond university matters, the zonal union also raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, citing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and farmer-herder clashes as threats to national stability.
ASUU urged parents, students, civil society, and the media to prevail on the affected state governments to honour the agreement, warning that failure to do so would jeopardize industrial peace and endanger the future of Nigerian youths.
Daily Trust reports that the Kano zone of the union comprises institutions like Kaduna State University (KASU), Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Northwest University (NWU), and Sule Lamido University (SLU).
