Lecturers at the learning centres of the National Teachers Institute (NTI) nationwide have threatened to boycott classes over unpaid allowances. 

The lecturers are accusing the institute of failing to pay their various allowances for two semesters in spite of the fact that all students have paid their fees. The allowances are on teaching, oral test, invigilation and supervision of practice teachers.

A lecturer at a centre in Abuja, who sought for anonymity, said lecturers resolved to engage in boycotts after exploring all avenues to persuade the authorities to pay their allowances but to no avail. 

Another lecturer said he and his colleagues could not understand why the institute was delaying their allowances without explanation. He said the institute charged ‘exorbitant fees’ for NCE, PGD and degree programmes.

An official at the NTI headquarters in Kaduna said that “it is not entirely true. But the delay may have been as a result of incomplete bank details from those concerned.” 

He said the institute paid its course facilitators promptly “once there is no mix-up in their bank details.”
