On Sunday, March 29, history was made as Samson Adamu, son of Nigeria’s famous sports administrator, Dr. Amos Adamu, was appointed as the Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the exalted seat since the continent’s football-governing body was founded 70 years ago.
The young Nigerian replaced Swiss-Congolese Veron Mosengo-Omba, who voluntarily resigned from his position after he was cleared of corruption allegations.
Until his appointment, the young Adamu was the CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, and played key roles in the successful organisation of major continental competitions.
In that capacity, he was the “engine room” for organizing major continental tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the CAF Champions League, and the Confederation.
He is widely respected within CAF for his deep understanding of the continent’s football structures and logistics.
But even before his recent appointment, Samson had acquired an enviable reputation as one of the brightest minds in world football.
Samson as founder of COPA Lagos
Samson is widely regarded as the pioneer of modern beach soccer in Africa, particularly in West Africa. He was the primary force behind transforming beach soccer from an informal pastime into a major commercial and televised sporting event.
In 2011, he founded Copa Lagos, Nigeria’s first international beach soccer tournament, through his company Kinetic Sports.
It was the first event of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, blending elite sport with “lifestyle” entertainment (music, fashion, and celebrity matches). Under his leadership, the tournament gained official recognition from Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) and FIFA, attracting world-class teams like Brazil, England, and Spain to play on the sands of Eko Atlantic.
Indeed, Copa Lagos proved that beach soccer was a commercially viable product in Africa, leading to increased sponsorship from major brands and higher television viewership.
In 2016, he achieved a major milestone by ensuring Nigeria hosted the African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations in Lagos, which served as the qualifier for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
His success with Copa Lagos also served as a springboard for his career at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), where he influenced the sport at a continental level.
His influence on beach soccer ultimately grew beyond Africa to the rest of the world.
Therefore, it didn’t come to anyone as a surprise when he was appointed CAF’s Director of Beach Soccer Competitions, a position he held until he was elevated to the position of Director of Tournament and Events.
In his father’s footsteps
It will be recalled that Samson’s father, Dr Adamu once served as an Executive Committee member of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, and also Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
In December 2000, Adamu senior as the Director of Sports Development in the then Federal Ministry of Sports was named President for the Organising Committee for the 8th All-Africa Games (COJA). He was famously known as “Mr. COJA.”
Under his leadership, Nigeria won the Games held in October 2023 in the newly constructed Abuja National Stadium now renamed as MKO Abiola Stadium Abuja.
However, following his controversial exit from football in 2010 as a result of FIFA ban over corruption allegations, Dr. Adamu rarely made public appearances.
His last public outing which was well publicised was in 2024 when he visited the current Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Mallam Shehu Dikko, to congratulate him on his appointment.
Apart from occasional interviews, he is hardly heard or seen at sporting events.
Therefore, the appointment of Samson is seen in most quarters in Nigeria as the “resurrection of Dr. Amos Adamu,” a man who wielded great influence in global football.
NSC congratulates history-maker, Samson
Meanwhile, as reactions continue to trail the appointment of the young football administrator, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has joined millions of Nigerians in congratulating him on the major milestone.
The Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, described the appointment as a proud moment for Nigeria, and a testament to the country’s growing influence in global sports administration.
“This is a landmark achievement not just for Samson Adamu, but for Nigeria as a whole. His track record within CAF speaks volumes, and we are confident that he will bring excellence, integrity, and progressive leadership to his new role,” said Dikko.
