River State governor,  Rotimi Amechi was today detained at the Akure airport for several hours and later prevented from entering Ekiti state to attend the final rally of the All Progressive Party (APC) in the state.

Although officials of the   Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have debunked claims that the airport was shut against Governors Amaechi and Murtala Nyako, they said that the airport was in operation throughout the day.

When Daily Trust correspondent visited the Airport at about 2pm today, security agents said journalists have been told to keep off.  The order they said was from above.

Amaechi who had returned back to the airtport with his entourage after he was prevented from entering Ekiti state was detained a second time at the airport. He later entered his car and  drove off heading inside the city.

The governor, visibly angry with the treatment he  received at the airport also refused to talk to journalists..

An official of FAAN , who craved anonymity said the Chieftains of   the All Progressive Congress (APC) that came to Akure in their aircrafts were allowed to take off and land at their schedule times without any hitch .

” It was not true that the airport was shut for political reason, we have been in operation since morning today and all the visitors that have been coming into the town by air have been landing while some have taken off, depending on their schedule, so I am not aware of that”  he said
 
About four  aircrafts were seen on ground waiting while engine of one was on, getting ready to take off when daily trust visited the Airport.

One of the aircrafts, it was learnt brought the minister of state for defence, Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro

As at the time of filing this report, three of the aircrafts were still on ground.

Earlier at the Airport, some security agents had attacked the Daily Trust correspondent ordering that she should remove her car and stay away. An overzealous policeman has attempted deflating the tyre of her car, preventing her from speaking with Amechi who was  on his way out of the airport after being prevented from taking off.
