UPDATED: National grid experiences first collapse in 2026

Nigeria’s electricity grid recorded its first collapse of 2026 with several electricity power plants going offline around 12:40pm on Friday.

Checks on the platform of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) shows that only Omoku gas power plant was the generating power around 1:50pm.

This is coming less than three weeks after the grid experienced partial collapses in December.

Confirming the blackout, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), in a statement, noted that the power outage occurred around 12:40pm.

Also, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) informed its customers that its network experienced a system collapse at 12:40hrs, which has resulted to a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power restoration resumes.”

Weekend Trust reports that as at 6:05pm the NISO was yet to restore the grid as the only six of the 23 power generating plants connected to the grid were still generating electricity.

Their combined generation was 608.51 megawatts against the peak 4,411.64 megawatts they generated during the day.

Also, distribution to companies was 235 megawatts with Abuja, Kaduna and Ibadan DisCos getting 50.00 megawatts each, while Kano Disco got 45 megawatts and Eko Disco was allocated 40 megawatts.

The rest got zero megawatt allocation.

In a statement, NISO said the national grid experienced a system-wide disturbance, which resulted in a total outage across the interconnected network.

It explained that preliminary operational reports indicate that the disturbance was associated with the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, alongside the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units.
