The National Association for Peaceful Elections in Nigeria (NAPEN) made the appeal in Abuja when its Board of Trustees (BOT) paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Prof. Suleiman Bogoro.
The leader of the team, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, an executive director of Inter-Gender Development Centre (INTERGENDER) said the nation’s education sector in the North is facing challenges, hence the need for special intervention to save it.
Also speaking, the Director Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), Dr. Abiola Afolabi, said with the current insurgency, schools have been destroyed, teachers and students have been killed and school calendar has been unduly disrupted.
 “We call on you to support not just building of structures for tertiary education but also support peace, impact assessment of insurgency on education and policies aimed at ending the insurgency. We also need to document the full impact of insurgency on tertiary education in Northern Nigeria.”
The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund), Prof. Suleiman Bagoro condemned the spate of attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in the North East.
Bagoro said government is concerned on the way and manner school children have been maimed and slaughtered in their schools by insurgents, regretting that “at midnight attacks were carried out on hapless and harmless school children.
“Our mandate in TETFUND does not suggest protecting schools but as you know the challenge on insecure schools and campuses in the Northeast, is imperative in the contemporary context of insurgency,” he said.
