The Mitchobdria Gallery has engaged in the exhibition of the works of a rising Nigerian artist, Awodiya Toluwani whose visually artistic articulation depicts black women in the Victorian Era.

The Texas-based Gallery in a statement said Toluwani’s works have figuratively brought back the period where images of black women are often overlooked and excluded in documented history.

Mitochondria Gallery specializes in artworks from emerging and established artists from Africa and the African diaspora, with a mission to educate, and expand the public awareness of contemporary art from Africa.

This exhibition termed ‘Legacy’ features paintings of Black women from the Victorian Era.

Mitochondria Gallery said Toluwani was chosen as the artist to bring this concept to life due to his past works that celebrate the essence of a Black woman which is the focal point of “Legacy.”

“Legacy links the past, present, and future through artistic expression. The visuals of this exhibition depict Black women in the Victorian Era, a period where images of Black women are often overlooked and excluded in documented history. The exhibition celebrates Black women for their intelligence, strength, beauty, and much more through artistic expression,” the gallery noted in a statement.
