US Hurricane Harvey: Celebrities donate to Red Cross

Celebrities from across the world have started donating to the American Red Cross to help victims of the Hurricane Harvey which continues to devastate the American state of Texas.

As #HurricaneHarvey continues through the Texas coast, several celebrities have sympathised with the victims, with some calling for worldwide support via their social media accounts.

During a heartfelt moment at MTV’s Video Music Awards, Katy Perry urged viewers to donate to the Red Cross.

"We’re praying for your safety in the days to come and stay with you as you rebuild, because we’re all in this together," said Perry.

Comedian and actor Kevin Hart posted to his Instagram account and challenged his celebrity friends to donate $25,000.

“I’m calling this the Hurricane Harvey Relief Challenge….Lets go @therock @beyonce @chrisrock Jay Z Dave Chappelle @jerryseinfeild @iamsteveharveytv @justintimberlake #HurricaneHarveyReliefChallenge #prayforhouston …..I am getting a link together now people. Help me help Houston,” he said

Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, former football player Alex Rodriguez, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, DJ Khaled, Nicki Minaj and T.I have all completed Hart’s challenge.

The challenge raised $1million in 48hours, with Brown pledging $100,000 and Khaled, Minaj, Lopez, Alex, Dwayne and T.I. each donating $25,000.

“I love & appreciate you all for your support. @therock @nickiminaj @chrisbrownofficial @troubleman31 "The Kardashian Family" @kandi @wendyshow @djkhaled @cp3 & Chain Smokers and everyone else that has donated. Let’s all keep Houston as well as the surrounding cities that are being affected in our prayers,” said Hart who was elated by the donations.

 

Hart also upped his donation to $50,000 and asked other celebrities to match his donation.

Former wrestler, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, also said he has donated $25,000 dollars (£19,000).

In a video on Instagram, he urged the people of Houston to "stay strong" and called on the public to donate what they could.

Country singer Chris Young also donated $100,000 to the relief efforts on a GoFundMe account. The money will go directly to the Red Cross, and the campaign has raised over $130,000

Actress Sandra Bullock, who has a home in Austin, committed $1 million to the Harvey relief fund.

Similarly, the Kardashian family donated $500,000 to The Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

JJ Watt of the Houston Texans created a fundraiser that has raised over $5 million, almost hitting the goal he posted on Twitter @JJwatt.
