USAID/MCHIP sensitizes birth spacing motivators in Gezawa, Fagge

Speaking during the event in Gezawa and Fagge Local Government Areas of Kano State, the Senior Programme Manager of USAID/MCHIP, Dr Tunde Segun, said when the male heads of families were counselled on the importance of child spacing, maternal complications would reduce.

While tasking the motivators to discharge their duties diligently, he said USAID/MCHIP came with the initiative in order to save the lives of women and children.

“USAID/MCHIP focuses on increasing the use of high quality Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) including family planning services so as to tackle maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in Kano State,” said the coordinator.

He said they are working in 10 General Hospitals and 12 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

“In achieving our programme objective of improving quality of EmONC services and increased demand in maternal and newborn services in the state, a number of community mobilisation activities have taken place in seven out of these 10 LGAs,” he said.

According to him, such activities have led to the setting up of Community Mobilisation Teams (CMT) and Community Core Groups (CCG) in communities around the PHC facilities and general hospitals.

He therefore noted that as a follow up to the foregoing activities, a core set of male volunteers were now trained to conduct household visits to male heads of families at least twice a month to discuss birth spacing issues.

 Also speaking on the occasion, the state family planning coordinator, Hajia Sa’a Na Ta’ala, said the state government  supports the programme as it was aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and death.
