Speaking while declaring open the event at the premises of the Teaching Hospital Dialysis Centre, the Chief Medical Director of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Professor Etete Peters, appealed to Nigerians to re-examine their life styles in order to reduce cases of renal failure.
Peters, who  explained that the significance of the day was to raise awareness on the importance of the kidneys to the overall health of the people  said that to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated problems, Nigerians must change their life styles.
Clinical studies according to him have shown that roughly about 2 in 20 persons worldwide have some degree of chronic kidney disease or the other.
He further stated that the most prominent risk factors for chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure (Hypertension), which accounts for over 65% of persons with chronic kidney disease and if not spotted early and managed appropriately, these conditions can lead to kidney failure and even premature death.
“In celebration of the World Kidney Day, the Renal Dialysis Center (RDC) of the UUTH the biggest outpatient dialysis chain in the South South geo political zone is offering both discounted and free eye and kidney test to all indigenes of the state,” he said.
He said that the hospital Renal Dialysis Centre provides patient-focused outpatient dialysis care and kidney management to patients with chronic kidney disease.
He commended the state government for supporting the teaching hospital’s renal center and urged all multinational companies operating in the state and other public spirited individuals to emulate the kind gesture.
World Kidney Day is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide, peters stated.
