The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Professor Ettete Peters who made this known in Uyo while speaking with our correspondent, however he did not mention the number of doctors that would benefit from the training
Peters explained that as the only federal government tertiary health institution catering for over four million people, the hospital medical personnel needed more exposure and specialized training especially in the area of renal diseases which he noted is currently on the increase.
He stated that although the cost of kidney transplant is quite high but if done locally would save the country a lot of foreign exchange.
The initiative, according to the CMD stemmed from the fact that kidney dialysis in the country is very expensive and patients are facing great challenge as most of them do not have enough financial resources when it has to be done overseas.
He further stated that the teaching hospital is equally rendering assistance to HIV/AIDS patients especially children and solicited for the support of all well meaning Nigerians, corporate organizations in his quest to deliver qualitative health care to the people.
