Uyo Liberation Movement meets monarch over equal distribution of political positions

A foremost socio-political organization in Akwa Ibom State, Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM), has taken its advocacy for equal distribution of political positions across the four clans in Uyo local government area, to the palace of the Paramount Ruler, His Royal Majesty Edidem Sylvanus Okon, emphasing on the need for the Assembly seat to go to Offot Clan.

This, the group believes, would strengthen the existing zoning arrangements and ensure harmony across clans in Uyo.

Speaking on the essence of the visit on Wednesday June 10, the President of the group, Barr. Udeme Ekot noted that, the group decided to take the advocacy to the Paramount Ruler whom he described as the custodian of culture, because the group wants him to be aware of what is happening.

“We in Uyo Liberation Movement, we decided to be voice to the voiceless. Uyo has a tradition that the House of Assembly Seat rotates around the four clans of Uyo. The deal started from the beginning of the 4th Republic and it has always been four years single term for each clan.

“If there is need to review that agreement, it should start with Oku Clan after Offot has concluded their tenure. We are taking this advocacy to everywhere starting from the Paramount Ruler. Uyo must be in unity.” President said.

Also amplifying the mandate of the group, the Secretary General of ULM, Elder (Prince) Emmanuel Sam, insisted that the House of Assembly must go to Offot Ukwa Clan.

“Our interest is to ensure that Offot Ukwa Clan produces House of Assembly member for Uyo State Constituency come 2027.” He said.

Responding, the Paramount Ruler of Uyo Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, Edidem Sylvanus Okon, appealed for peaceful resolution of any political disagreement.

He warned politicians against using their closeness to power to victimize others.

“I would encourage you all to always tell government your demands and when it is necessary to sit on the round table, please do so because brothers are not meant to quarrel.”

Others present at the courtesy visit were: Hon. Nse Brownson; Mr. David Ikpe; Mr. Caleb Effiong; Mr. Usen Okon, and Mr. Ifiok and other members of the delegation.
