The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna is collaborating with the Federal University, Gashua ,Yobe State to end the perennial kidney disease which has claimed many lives for the past 30 years in Gashua.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, the initiator of the research work, Professor Maimuna Waziri, said some of the known environmental toxins like lead and cadmium are associated with kidney disease.
A  statement signed by the university’s head of information and protocol, Adamu Saleh quoted Waziri as saying they lead to protractions like  cardiovascular disease and impairment of brain development in children. In addition, they  are found in water and irrigated vegetables samples in the locality in excess of the recommended safe limits.
Professor Waziri said the aim of the research is to assess the level of heavy metal toxins in the environment and to establish a relationship between levels of the environmental pollutant and the burden of kidney diseases in the locality.
Team leader from NWRI, who is also the Special Assistant (Technical) to the Executive Director, Dr. Omogbemi Omoloju Yaya, told the Vice Chancellor that the Institute is committed to supporting the research and come up with a lasting solution to the issue of water related diseases in the community.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Andrew Haruna, said that the collaboration shows the love the Institute has for the university and the community at large.
