Mudiame University, Irrua, Edo State, has commenced the construction of new facilities for its College of Medicine as part of efforts to strengthen medical education and expand healthcare training capacity in Nigeria.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the College of Medicine Administrative Building and the Department of Anatomy Laboratory took place alongside the institution’s fifth matriculation ceremony, drawing dignitaries from government, academia and the wider community.
Speaking at the event, the Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sunny Eromosele, said the institution was founded to provide quality education driven by innovation, practical relevance and strong ethical values.
According to him, the university has continued to grow steadily since its establishment, guided by a deliberate strategy to build an institution capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
“Five years ago, Mudiame University was founded with a clear and compelling vision to build an institution rooted in quality education, practical relevance, innovation and strong ethical values, while engaging confidently with the global community,” he said.
Eromosele noted that the university has prioritised partnerships with industry and international academic institutions to strengthen teaching and research.
He cited the institution’s collaboration with University West in Sweden, which led to the hosting of the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) workshop — the first of its kind in Nigeria — as a key milestone that positioned the university as a centre for advanced manufacturing research.
The Chancellor also disclosed that students of the institution were participating in programmes organised by the International Institute of Welding at the global level, reflecting the university’s growing international academic engagement.
He said the university had begun a strategic transition to its main campus, which would provide expanded infrastructure and improved facilities for research, innovation and community engagement.
Addressing the newly admitted students, Eromosele urged them to uphold discipline, integrity and dedication throughout their academic journey.
“The world you are preparing to enter demands more than certificates. It demands discipline, resilience, innovation and leadership,” he said.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel O. Aluyor, described the matriculation ceremony as an important step in the academic journey of the new students.
He said the institution was committed to producing graduates who are intellectually sound, morally upright, entrepreneurial and globally competitive.
Aluyor urged the students to take advantage of the opportunities available within the university environment, including research, digital learning and entrepreneurial development.
“University life offers freedom, but that freedom must be guided by responsibility. Attend your lectures, engage in research, develop digital and entrepreneurial skills, and make good use of the facilities provided,” he said.
He also commended the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his efforts in advancing education in the state, noting that the governor’s policies have helped strengthen the educational landscape.
The Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Solomon Edebiri, said the university was committed to addressing workforce gaps by training technologists and skilled professionals who can bridge the divide between academic knowledge and practical industry needs.
“We are currently training the middle-level manpower — the technologists and skilled professionals required to bridge the gap in the workforce,” he said.
Edebiri added that the university has adopted innovative academic strategies, including what it described as “brain recirculation”, which involves inviting international scholars and lecturers to contribute to teaching and research.
Delivering the matriculation lecture, Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, praised the leadership of the university for its vision and commitment to educational development.
“I am pleasantly surprised by the development here. The Chancellor has done marvellously well. This is a vision he has pursued with determination and a ‘can-do’ attitude,” he said.
Imasuen noted that investments in education and infrastructure such as those undertaken by the university were essential for Nigeria’s long-term development.
The ceremony concluded with the formal groundbreaking for the new medical facilities, a project expected to enhance the university’s capacity for training future healthcare professionals.
