Varsities’ lecturers under the aegis of African Engineering Education Association (AEEA) have reinstated the need for updated knowledge in practical and problem solving technologies which they considered as relevant to the industry in 21st century.
This was made known by participants who were at the Workshop on Capacity Building for Engineering and Technology Educators, held in University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos.
According to the workshop coordinator, Prof. Funso Falade, the need for updated knowledge on modern technology becomes imperative because of the dynamism that currently accompanies their usage and application in the industry.
“The focus of this workshop is to update and expand engineering and technology educators’ knowledge of the current best practices in different, pedagogical methods that put students actively at the centre of learning. For universities to produce 21st century engineers with adequate practical and problem solving skills, required by the industry, there is need to change the teaching styles by the teachers to match the students’ learning styles,” Prof. Falade said.
Also speaking, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, Vice Chancellor, Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo lamented that engineering faculties in most Nigerian universities are under-funded.
“Their laboratories resembling outmoded mechanic garage rather than state-of- art technology. Due to scarcity of financial resources, university multi-disciplinary faculties and departments compete for funds leading to non-conformity to standardized research-based system that engenders virtuosity and diversity- that is bad news for any profession,” he said.
