Pope Francis’ condition showed a “slight improvement” Monday, the Vatican said, as the critically ill pontiff spent his 11th day in hospital with double pneumonia.

“The critical clinical conditions of the Holy Father demonstrate a slight improvement. Even today there were no episodes of asthmatic respiratory attacks; some laboratory tests have improved,” said the Vatican in its evening bulletin on the 88-year-old’s health.

Earlier on Monday, it said Pope Francis passed a good night.

The 88-year-old pope, the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church since 2013, was admitted on February 14 with breathing difficulties.

“The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting”, the Vatican said. This is the longest hospitalisation of Francis’s papacy.
