Bursar of the University of Calabar, Mr. Peter Agi, has said that as a principal officer of the institution, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Zanna Akpagu, has no power to suspend him for trying to instil financial discipline.
Public Relations Officer of the school, Mr. Effiong Eyo, in a press statement, conveyed the official notice of the suspension of the bursar who had a face-off with the Vice Chancellor over funds management.
On Monday last week, a section of non-academic staff embarked on a public protest within the campus, accusing the bursar of fraud, autocracy and blocking staff financial dues and contractors’ fees.
Another protest by students and workers took place in favour of the bursar, although some leaders of the Students Union Government were said to have been arrested.
On his purported suspension, Agi said “I do not know anything about it.   Nobody has communicated with me about suspension. In any case, the Vice Chancellor has no power to suspend me, a principal officer of the university like himself. It is only the University Governing Council that has such power if they find me guilty of any offence. The suspension saga is all speculation.
“Nobody has issued me with a query or summoned me before any panel to hear from me even though I have been at the intensive care unit of a hospital which they and the police are aware of.  This ought to be the proper thing according to personnel rule.”
