The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has said there is a need to introduce internet subsidies and inclusive platforms for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The vice chancellor who was speaking during the Annual Conference of the Committee of Directors of ICT of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (COomICT-NTI) said this would help to promote innovations in tertiary education.
He stated that Nigeria needs clear policies on e-learning, clear policies on data management, artificial intelligence and that of cyber security are critically essential for ICT to serve as a bridge, not a barrier.
He said, “There must be strategic integration of ICT, aligning ICT initiatives with the university’s mission and also that of the national educational board. We need to commit to policy innovation, develop robust ICT policies that support teaching, research, data governance, artificial intelligence, cyber security and digital equity. ICT leaders and you must ensure that digital strategies are embedded in the institutional development plan.
“There is also a clear need for general capacity building. Investment for a comprehensive training programme for the faculty, the technical staff and also the students is fundamentally important and essential. Digital literacy should be seen as a foundational competence in 21st century education.”
On his part, the Chairman of ComDICT-NTI, Daniel Inusa Yakmut, said despite the adoption of digital learning in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, significant gaps still persist.
“We are faced with challenges like inconsistent power supply, limited broadband access, funding constraints, and resistance to change which hinders progress. Yet, within these challenges lie unparalleled opportunities. Therefore, in an era where tech technology evolves at breakneck speed, our role as strategic leaders has never been more critical. Digital transformation is not merely about adopting tools; it is about reimagining education through a lens of innovation, equity, and sustainability to foster excellence in our institutions,” he said.
