He said private universities must also draw from TETFUND since they are also training Nigerian students.
Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, Akanji who is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University said, “I am of the opinion that privately-owned universities should benefit from TETFUND because TETFUND is contributed into by companies operating in Nigeria and private universities are training Nigerian children for the Nigerian economy.
“I think government should have another look at the act enabling TETFUND so that private universities will benefit from it,” he said.
He dismissed the view that private universities are out to make money, saying, “to provide university education is cost-intensive. I don’t know how they will make the type of profit some of the stakeholders think because of high school fees.”
According to him, some stakeholders think that private universities are to make profit but forgot that the cost of training one student in the university cannot be paid by that student. “Because private universities don’t have subvention from government, their fees had to go up. Those who had the intention of making profit fell out along the way,” he said.
The VC who decried the frequent strikes that have disrupted academic calendar in many Nigerian universities, urged the various institutions to imbibe the correct university culture of October to July.
