Opuana who stated this in Abuja, further noted that those of them who were involved in sports then were doing it for the love of the game and not for any material or financial gains, as there were no financial rewards at the time.

“We competed for honour and for pride. Every time I look at the medal I won then, a smile creases my face. It is the most beautiful medal that was ever made. Since then I have not seen such”, Opuana stated.

Recalling the sweet memories of participating in the annual NNPC/Mobil Track and Field Championship, Opuana said he would not fail to attend the yearly event as far as he continues to live.

 “God keeping me alive, wherever I am I will come out with my walking stick and attend because I know champagne will be popped, awards will flow and past champions will be honoured.”

Representing Katsina state then Mr Opuana remembers that the gold medal earned him a scholarship to study at the Federal College of Education in Katsina State.

From Katsina he moved on to Benue state, then the Customs before travelling abroad in search of the Golden Fleece.

On the present AFN board he said it may be too early to judge. “They should be given time to perform. I can however say that the board is made up of intelligent and well meaning athletics people who should be able to take the sport to greater heights.

“They have hit the ground running and I wish them well,” he said.
