A veteran journalist, Abdulkadir Ahmed Ibrahim Kwakwatawa has commended Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for reviving the Triumph newspaper.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, Kwakwatawa stated that the company was established by the former governor of the state, late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi in 1981 to enlighten readers on government policies at local, state and federal levels; to criticize the performance of public institutions and to educate the teeming populace in the state and beyond.
“The company was publishing daily, weekly and weekend titles in English ( Daily Triumph, Weekend Triumph and Sunday Triumph); Hausa (Alfijir) and in Ajami manuscript (Albishir) which was a novelty in the media industry in Nigeria that is yet to be rivaled”, Kwakwatawa said.
He further stated that it was to the credit of the company that it produced two former presidents of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in persons of Garba Shehu and Baba Halilu Dantiye and two former presidents of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Muhammad Sani Zorro and Muhammadu Garba, the current commissioner of information in the state.
“Sadly, the company was closed down by the administration of Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso in 2012 and its staff were redeployed to other government agencies”, he said.
He said the governor had fulfilled his pledge by reopening the company in response to the resolutions of participants at a seminar on Media and Society held in January this year at the state NUJ Press Centre.
He also commended the government for funding the digitization of its two electronic media outfits Radio Kano and Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV– 44).
