Two of the victims of Easter Sunday’s auto crash at Amukoko area of Lagos are still in critical condition in the hospital, Eko Trust checks have revealed.
The victims were among the five persons that were knocked down by an alleged drunk driver along Muri Ojora Street, Amukoko. One of the victims, 65-year-old Mariam Raji, died the following day at the Ajegunle General Hospital where she was rushed to while another, a pregnant woman, had to undergo the amputation of her legs at the hospital to save her life.
The Mercedes Benz 190 car with registration number EPE471CD involved in the incident was driven by one Eugene Nweke, a resident of 63, Muri Ojora Street, Amukoko, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police, the vehicle had rammed into five persons, one of whom died, while the fate of two other victims presently hang in the balance. “The pregnant victim among them was almost dying but was stabilized after her legs were cut off,” a police source said.
The 36-year-old driver of the vehicle told police investigators that the car belongs to his in-laws, adding that he did not set out to kill or injure anyone.
The police, however, said they found several consumed and unconsumed bottles of alcohol in the car soon after the accident occurred.
An angry mob almost lynched the alleged drunk driver to death but for the intervention of the police. “If not that the police got a call on time, the mob would have burnt him alive. The suspect only realised what he had done after he was detained.
“This is a fatal case here. It involves death. But the Investigation Officer and the Vehicle Inspection Officers will check the vehicle to look at the suspect’s claim of brake failure. Investigation will also show if the suspect was under the influence of alcohol. The matter will be heading to court soon. He is still in our custody because his case involves death,” the police source said.
