The police chief of the southeastern U.S. city of Charlotte, North Carolina, said yesterday the video of Tuesday’s police shooting of an allegedly unarmed African American man will eventually be released.
“It’s a matter of when and it’s a matter of sequence,” Chief Kerr Putney said at a news conference Friday. “I want to be more thoughtful and deliberate in delivering the whole story,” Putney added, commenting on the shooting death Tuesday of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, in an incident recorded by police cameras.
Putney also said the case has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation to ensure an independent inquiry and that an arrest has been made in connection with the fatal Wednesday night shooting of a demonstrator.
Putney’s remarks are consistent with Mayor Jennifer Roberts’ desire to release the video to the public. She said earlier she and other city officials were having discussions with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and state investigators “about how soon we can release” the footage.
