The Deputy Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Lagos State Command, Mr Emmanuel Ayisire has stressed the need for community policing to curb the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.
He stated this last week while leading a team from the command on a courtesy visit to the Lagos office of Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust newspapers
He said: “We are bold to say that Vigilante Group of Nigeria is the foremost community policing organisation in Nigeria and with the present security challenges in the country, we believe that community policing is the only way to solve the myriad of security problems plaguing the nation.”
He also called on the Lagos State government to give the organisation all necessary support for it to do its job effectively.
“We are not saying that the Lagos State government should put our men on their payroll; what we are saying is that we need assistance in the area of logistics, especially offices and equipment, to aid our personnel’s work. For instance, our units in the local Governments and Local Council Development Areas in the state need places where people can locate them, if they need our assistance.
“Also, we have anti robbery squads in various parts of Lagos State and we need vehicles for our men to do their job effectively. Moreover, benefit of training and equipment from the state government will go a long way in helping the VGN to achieve its objectives.”
On what has been achieved by the organisation in Lagos State so far, Ayisire said: “We have been assisting the security agencies in solving difficult crime-related issues in the state. Recently, our men arrested six of the ‘One million boys gang’ terrorising Lagos and handed them to the police. We also rescued a Chinese man from kidnappers in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, where we lost one of our men in the process.”
