Vigilantes have arrested a man, identified as Adamu Saleh, with a stolen ram at a cattle market in the Abaji Area Council of the FCT.

A member of the vigilante group, Saidu Ibrahim, said the suspect was arrested on Saturday, which was the market day, when he brought the ram to sell.

He said the arrest followed a report by one Malam Yakubu Hussaini, a resident of Sumami village near Rubochi under the Kuje Area Council, who reported that his ram was missing. The owner quickly rushed to the cattle market and informed the vigilantes and members of the cattle dealers’ association about the missing ram.

According to him, at about 2:12 pm, the suspect brought a ram into the market on a bike in search of a buyer.

He said he was subsequently arrested after he could not explain how he came about the ram.

“Even before the suspect came to the market, the owner had already reported to the vigilantes and described how the ram looked. And luckily enough, the suspect alighted from the bike with the ram when the owner sighted him and arrested him in the process,” he said.

He said the suspect was almost beaten by a mob at the market, but the vigilantes intervened and handed him over to security operatives who were invited and whisked him away.

A police source who preferred anonymity also confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspect, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
