Members of the Vigilante Group and the Town Taskforce have led the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies to raid several illicit drugs joints in Umudioka, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The local security outfits took the law enforcement agencies to some joints in the community where different types of illicit and hard drugs were sold, especially crystal methamphetamine popularly known as ‘mkpụrụmmirim in Igbo.
The raid, which was carried out in conjunction with the police, and Department of State Security (DSS), led to the arrest of many people suspected to be drug addicts and dealers.
The team raided and destroyed nine joints and shanties where the hard drugs were sold and consumed in the community.
The joints destroyed in the community included the popular “Umunte, Gozie Roger’s, People’s, Olisa Umeneze, Umuejima Jenkins, Cobra and Akpunwa bunks.”
Some of the drug dependents arrested during the operation were taken to Anambra State Psychiatric Hospital, Nawfia, for rehabilitation.
Speaking to newsmen after the raid, the President General of Umudioka Improvement Union, Mr. Chike Odoji, reiterated his promise that his leadership will no longer tolerate the trafficking of illicit drugs in the community.
He warned the perpetrators to leave the community as they were more than ready to face them head-on until the town is fully cleared of their destructive activities.
I could be recalled that the President General of Umudioka Improvement Union, Mr. Chike Odoji, had last month warned that the community would not tolerate anybody dealing in illicit drugs.
