The village head of Karmo, in the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Umar Gani Sarki, has decried the absence of social amenities in his domain, which is under Jiwa chiefdom.
Malam Umar, also referred as Gomo 3, told Aso Chronicle that for many years, the area lacked a senior secondary school and good road, and suffered under an overstretched healthcare system.
He said the absence of these amenities has made life unbearable for children and their parents who are mostly low income earners.
According to him, most of the people in the area are the ones rendering various kinds of essential services in the capital city.
“We only have a single junior secondary school here. Our children who graduate must travel far distances to attend Senior Secondary school. You most agree with me that school is one of the basic things that shape the life of people.
“There is one senior secondary school at nearby Idu community, but that could only accommodate few of them.
“We therefore appeal for the establishment of a full-fledged secondary school in our community, or the available junior secondary school be upgraded to senior level,” the chief said.
The traditional leader also lamented that the present health centre in the area was overwhelmed by the rising population, as its being shared by his community and nearby ones, where it is situated.
He said the area, originally named “Garmo” in Gede language meaning “food centre” is losing most of its farmlands to development activities, while available ones are being challenged with the issue of encroachment by nomadic herders.
“We therefore call on the government to look into the issue, and also support our local vigilante with logistics to enable them to work better in dealing with prevailing security challenges,” he added.
He commended the chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abdullahi Adamu Candido, for rehabilitating the Dede-Karmo road, adding that had impacted positively on the lives of people in the area. “We also appeal that such gesture be extended to the other roads,” he appealed.
