The Yakubu Gowon Centre in collaboration with the Presidential Committee on the Northeast Initiative, Philips Pharmaceuticals Nigeria Limited, the Centre for HIV/AIDS and STD Research and Moriah Trust Limited is carrying out a viral hepatitis vaccination exercise for health care providers, internally displaced persons and internally displaced returnees in the Northeast.

The intervention is aimed at providing vaccinal coverage in the six states of the Northeast and combating the spread of viral hepatitis within the region especially among the IDP population using public-private partnerships. The exercise is being conducted in phases and the first Gowon centre from the 20th to 22nd of December 2016 with 217 persons screened.

Subsequently, the PCNI supported the intervention exercise with the sum of N7.5 million and N13.6 million for the implementation of the second and third phases of the programme. 2000 persons in Yobe State and 55 in Borno State were screened and vaccinated in the second phase while 3000 persons were vaccinated in the third phase. PCNI has committed N14.3 million to support the fourth and final phase which will be conducted in Borno State in due course.

 

 

 

 

The intervention is targeted at 5,000 persons in each of the six states of the Northeast with an additional training component embedded for health workers in each state so as to ensure sustainability. So far 5000 persons have been successfully screened and vaccinated
