Fellow Nigerians, our democracy is in danger. As we prepare for the 2027 general election, the ugly practice of vote buying is spreading like wildfire. Politicians, regardless of party, now treat it as normal to hand out thousands of naira to voters just to secure their support.

What we saw during last Saturday’s bye-elections across the country was shameful. At many polling units, voters were openly induced with money. If this trend continues, the 2027 election may not be about leadership, competence, or ideas it may simply be about who has the deepest pocket.

The painful truth is this: nobody has ever been prosecuted or jailed for vote buying in Nigeria. This lack of punishment has turned the crime into business as usual. How can our democracy grow when our votes are sold to the highest bidder?

We must demand action. Security agencies should arrest and prosecute vote buyers, no matter their political party. Political parties should discipline their members who engage in this dangerous practice. And the National Assembly must make vote buying a serious crime, punishable by at least ten years in jail. Only then will politicians think twice before corrupting our elections.

Nigeria’s future is too important to be traded for a few thousand naira. Our votes are our voices and once we sell them, we sell our future. If we want progress, good roads, jobs, hospitals, and a brighter tomorrow, we must stop vote buying and protect our democracy.

The time to act is now. For the sake of 2027 and for the sake of Nigeria.
