Bolivia’s Congress has voted to amend the constitution to allow the President Evo Morales to run for re-election again in five years’ time.
The vote went through by a two-thirds majority in a congress dominated by his supporters.
He has been in power since 2005, but the amendment discounts his first two terms, as those elections took place under a previous constitution.
The amendment is to go to a national referendum next February.
Speaking in New York where he is attending a meeting of the UN General Assembly, Mr Morales said he had been invited to extend his term in office.
“I’m not trying to stay in power forever. I also want to tell you, some have said, ‘Evo forever’.”
