The only primary school in Tokulo village in Bwari Area Council was designated as a voting place with about three polling stations during the February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections and hundreds of voters from neighbouring villages converged there to cast their votes. This reporter was in the village to cover the election.
Many voters however voiced out their concern over the deplorable condition of the school’s infrastructure and public education in general. They said effort should be made to rebuild the school.
Jeremiah Musa said the school had four blocks of two classrooms each but only few of the classes had furniture and nearly all the buildings have leaking roofs. He said pupils in the area were eager for education but the appalling condition in which they found themselves could affect their academic achievement or even scare them.
The school also has no good toilet system and waste bins while most of the chairs have been damaged by vandals.
He said authorities should improve the learning condition in rural areas to reduce out-of-school kids and ensure quality public education.
Another voter in his early middle age said one of the blocks of classrooms in the school was refurbished in 2008 but it started crumbling few years after. “At the moment, the classrooms were not fit for human habitation because they were poorly executed. There are no chairs, windows, doors and roof in some blocks,” he added.
He said though it was way off beam to apportion blame to any individual or government over the poor state of the school, but that community leaders and education authorities must get involved in education.
