The project is called Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).
Mr. Fidelis Anukwa, coordinator of the project told journalists: “The project is co-funded by the World Bank, the blueprint for the project has been designed and approved and work will soon commence.”
Anukwa explained that the collaboration by the World Bank has a loan component which the state government will, in due course, be expected to defray.
The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of NEWMAP, Engr. Osam Okpa, pledged to thoroughly follow up every process in the project.
Okpa appealed for cooperation from the benefiting communities by way of protecting the working materials to enable them enjoy the project.
The consultant for the project sensitisation, Mrs. Mojisola Akpojiyoubi, said they have not faced any major challenges, so far, other than normal hitches.
Chairman of one of the benefitting communities, Nyaghasang community near Calabar, Dr. Edem Asuquo, who involved with the World Bank Cross River State NEWMAP project, disclosed that gully erosion challenges are as a result of the poor water diversion channel done by the contractor that handled the construction of Access road, Akpandem and Canaan Avenue in 2011.
He lamented that they are exposed to great danger as their houses and farms are likely to be washed away soon.
