Although the team has been playing above average, its major problem has remained inability to convert all the begging chances that came the way of the players and this has become a source of serious concern to the coach and other Nigerian football fans.

Speaking to Trustsports yesterday, Chukwu said if the team eventually qualifies as has been reported in the media, the players should see such qualification as another opportunity for the team to atone for its dismal performance so far.

He said that in the game of football, anything can happen and so nobody should write off the team as he said if the players put their acts together, they may be able to go all the way to the finals and even lift the trophy in the end.

“In the game of football anything can happen. The team actually played badly but with this qualification, I expect the players to make amends and get to where nobody expected them to get to”.

Chukwu noted that the major problem with the team is the attackers who have remained shy in front of goal.

The former Eagles and Rangers International coach expressed disappointment that even as the Tahitians were short of one man, the attackers could not score just as he stressed that out of the five goals the team managed to score, four came from the defenders.

“The team is not totally bad but the attackers have not been able to carry out their responsibility. And in this game, you can only win when you score goals. If you look at the match against Tahiti, it was the defenders that scored four of the five goals. This tells you that the team’s attack is blunt and must be sharpened by the coach”.

In his reaction, ex-international and Enyimba FC coach, Eguavoen said playing flamboyant football without scoring is nothing but beautiful nonsense.

He said the team is playing without scoring and if they take such performance to the next round where there are even tougher opponents, the story may get worse.

“Football is about goals. You can play all the football you know but if you can’t score, it makes no sense. The attackers must learn to score goals now that they have a chance to compensate for the past errors.

 “This is the knock out stage. It is either they score goals or they are eliminated. I just hope the attackers will brace up to the challenge” he said.
