Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto State was one of the few personalities bestowed with an award at the celebrated event. It was in recognition of the robust feat recorded in the state. Governor Aliyu Wamakko carted away the award for the best Governor in Housing Development’s for the year 2012.
According to the event’s Coordinator, Mr. Festus Adebayo, the annual award was instituted in 2007 as a way of encouraging the government at various levels in promoting home ownership for Nigerians. “Raising housing needs awareness for the government and also provides a platform for developers, manufacturers of building materials among other stakeholders in order to come together for exchange of ideas is our vision.”
On the nomination of Governor Wamakko, the organizers revealed that opinion poll on who should be the Housing Governor of the year 2012 was conducted by two reputed housing teams through mass customized text messages on the question- “Who do you think is the best Housing Governor in Nigeria today.”
“Four Governors include that of Sokoto, Yobe, Niger and Ondo States, were presented to the public’s opinion poll. But Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State however emerged winner with the highest poll votes of 245.” He said.
But this year’s edition that saw Governor Wamakko as the winner, according to the organizer, could be traced to his dogged effort in housing development and the governor’s desire to improve the standard living of the common man in the state, with the provision of shelter set as the cardinal reference point.
