The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) have called for a strict adherence to cities master plan and called on all Nigerians to key into the change philosophy of the present administration.
The Chairman, NITP FCT Chapter, Tpl. Garba Kwamkur, who made the call last week at the just concluded Town Planners Week which held at the NAF Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja, said the practice of town planning involves knowing how cities are built and environment are functionally kept so that people live in harmony and space is minimized.
He attributed green areas as well as places that have been encroached upon by the high and mighty in the society as the major cause of flooding especially along sewage and water lines and called on people to respect the master plan.
Kwamkur said cities are classified according to densities, low, medium and high and public enlightenement is going on to sensitize people on the importance of strict adherence to the master plan, this he said would also encourage investment in our cities.
Tpl. Mukhtar Galadima, Chairman, Organising Committee of the event, said the theme for this year’s activity is “Urban and Regional Planning Practice in the Era of Change” with a sub theme “Urban and Regional Planning: A Veritable Tool for Good Urban Governance” and “The Imperatives of Advocacy Planning in the Acquisition and Development of Land in the FCT”.
He said the choice of the theme is in tandem with global trends and apt with the current mantra of change all over the globe and especially the current administration’s focus on change hence the need to look at how planners can practise the profession in this era.
Galadima said all over the world now there is gradual transformation from the traditional master planning approach to incremental planning approach with a gradual departure also from individual transport ownership to mass transit and also from motor cities to pedestrian cities.
